Our Lower School program nurtures each student as an active learner, encouraging children to explore ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and make meaningful connections to the world around them.
Guided by dedicated teachers who know and value each child as an individual, students develop the confidence, curiosity, and joy of learning that will serve them throughout their lives. Drawing on research-based practices and a deep understanding of child development, our faculty help students build strong foundational skills, communicate clearly, think flexibly, and find wonder in both their studies and the world around them.
Our students are young mathematicians, authors, scientists, artists, activists, and more. Milton classrooms become vibrant communities, workshops, and creative spaces where collaboration, discovery, and imagination thrive.

Dare to Explore and Learn
Math
We understand mathematics as the study of relationships, patterns, and the many ways we make sense of the world around us. At its heart, math is a joyful process of curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. In our Lower School classrooms, students are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, collaborate, and persevere through meaningful challenges. We believe children learn best when they are invited not only to practice skills, but also to understand the “how” and “why” behind mathematical thinking. By nurturing deep understanding alongside confidence and curiosity, we help students grow into thoughtful, capable young mathematicians.
Reading
Language and literacy grow hand in hand, creating the foundation for confident, joyful reading. In the Lower School, we support each child’s reading journey with a caring, research-based approach grounded in the science of reading and structured literacy. Through explicit phonics instruction, rich language experiences, and daily opportunities to practice and grow, students build strong skills in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension.
Our lessons are thoughtfully designed to build step by step, helping students gain confidence as their knowledge deepens over time. Daily instruction includes engaging whole-class learning, independent practice, reflection, and small-group support tailored to students’ individual needs. By nurturing both skill and curiosity, we help children develop into capable, enthusiastic lifelong readers.
Writing
Our writing program nurtures students as thoughtful, confident communicators whose words have purpose and meaning. Through authentic writing experiences, students apply strategies learned in class and grow through feedback from teachers and peers.
Beginning with foundational skills such as phonics, spelling, and sentence writing, students gradually build toward more complex grammar, paragraphs, and essays as they grow. Along the way, they develop strong writing habits, executive function skills, and an understanding of different genres and the writing process.
Just as importantly, students see themselves as part of a vibrant community of writers — inspired by beloved authors, encouraged by classmates, and supported in taking creative risks as their voices develop.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies program helps students better understand themselves, their communities, and the wider world. Through hands-on, project-based learning, students explore big ideas about identity, community, fairness, and belonging while developing the skills needed to contribute thoughtfully to a diverse and interconnected society.
In the early years, learning begins with students’ own experiences and immediate communities, gradually expanding to include broader historical and global perspectives as they grow. Across every grade level, students are encouraged to make meaningful connections between the world around them and their own lives, building empathy, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of others.
Spanish
We believe learning another language opens doors to connection, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the world. Our Lower School Spanish program meets students where they are –whether they are just beginning to learn Spanish or already speak it fluently–and supports each child’s growth with a flexible, engaging approach.
Students build confidence through conversational vocabulary, songs, stories, and interactive experiences while also developing early reading skills in Spanish through phonics and rich children’s literature. Along the way, students explore the diverse cultures, histories, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world, helping them grow as thoughtful, globally minded learners.
