STUDENT LIFE
At Milton Academy, the Lower School is a joyful place where children feel known, supported, and excited to come to school every day.
Beyond the classroom, they discover new interests in cocurricular specials, such as art, woodworking, and music; build lasting friendships; and gain the confidence to try new things.
Designed to nurture students through each phase of their development, the Lower School student experience intentionally harnesses the spirit of play. Students explore their interests as they grow in their identities, as friends and classmates, and as citizens of their broader communities. Projects such as the Lower School Farmers’ Market teach lifelong lessons about working together in service to others, while the Grade 5 Buddies program gives the division’s oldest students meaningful opportunities to stand out as leaders.
Dedicated Spaces for Student Fun
Milton’s Lower School facilities are specially designed for small people with big imaginations.
In the Junior Building, students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 have a dedicated library, playground, dining room, and wood shop. Students in Grades 3 through 5 have a home in Greenleaf Hall, where they have their own outdoor play area, as well as a science room. Greenleaf is also home to Spanish and music classrooms for the entire division, and is connected to an auditorium for divisional meetings and performances. The adjacent Caroline Saltonstall Building hosts the Lower School art room, a library for Grades 3 through 5, and a popular maker space where students have early, hands-on experience with computer science and robotics.
A Magical K–12 Community
Lower School students are beloved members of Milton’s K–12 community, taking part in all-school programming throughout the year, from special assemblies and traditions to heritage celebrations. Lower School performers are often the highlight of all-school events, such as the school’s winter assembly and Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, where they receive love and support from their older peers.
Because Milton is a K–12 school, Lower School students have a unique and aspirational view of their future as learners and community members. Upper- and Middle-School students regularly visit classrooms as guests or volunteers, giving Milton’s youngest students a built-in network of role models and friends.
