The History Behind the Motto
“Dare to Be True” has origins rooted in poetry, character, and the values that shape the Milton experience: courage, truthfulness, and loyalty.
It is believed that in 1898, Mr. Joseph S. Lee, a beloved teacher in Milton’s history, suggested the motto “Dare to Be True,” a line from one of 17th-century English poet George Herbert’s poems.
Within weeks, the motto was incorporated into Milton’s official seal. The result: a dignified crest featuring an open book bearing the words “Dare to Be True,” a symbol that continues to represent Milton’s spirit today.

Today, “Dare to be true” remains a lifelong call to action for all Miltonians. Yes, it shapes our students from their earliest days on campus, yet it continues to guide alumni long after graduation.
Our motto emphasizes living authentically, supporting others, and having the courage to pursue what is right, even when it is difficult. It challenges our Milton community to think critically, act with integrity, and use their education as a force for good in the world.
